Challenging Cases in Pediatric Hospital Medicine is a collection of interesting pediatric hospital medicine cases that address clinical conundrums or issues and are to be used as teaching cases of clinical reasoning. Other cases will use inpatient care as a launching point for complex ethical dilemmas or system-based care.
Each chapter begins with the clinical competencies that will be addressed and the patient presentation. Next, the chapter steps through the case workup and management, as well as the case outcome and follow-up. Chapters conclude with valuable pearls, discussions of aspects of care that are not just disease management but a true reflection of the scope of pediatric hospital medicine. Recommended readings round out each chapter.
Daniel A. Rauch, MD, FAAP, SFHM is the Chief of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center and Professor of Pediatrics at Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr Rauch has been very involved in the development of the field of Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) with leadership roles in the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Academic Pediatric Association, planning the national PHM conference and 2 separate regional conferences, starting the national PHM Fellows meeting, and helping move forward the PHM certification effort. He is coeditor of Caring for the Hospitalized Child: A Handbook of Inpatient Pediatrics, 2e, and Challenging Cases in Pediatric Hospital Medicine.
Snezana Nena Osorio, MD, MS, FAAP is Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Osorio, who serves as Vice Chair for Quality and Patient Safety in the Department of Pediatrics, leads the Departments Quality and Patient Safety initiatives, provides clinical care in the Division of General Academic Pediatrics, and serves as an educator in the Department. She is also an Attending Pediatrician at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
