Seizures are a presenting feature of many neurosurgical disorders, and can arise as a result of neurosurgical treatment or its complications. Recognition and effective management of seizures can be life-saving, and will minimise long term seizure induced morbidity. In this Element the authors describe seizure diagnosis, emergency and ongoing management, and considerations in neurosurgical conditions.
Central nervous system, affliction, although rare, represents one of the most severe extra-pulmonary manifestations of tuberculosis, potentially leading to substantial morbidity and mortality if not promptly addressed. Cranial tuberculosis can manifest in various forms, including tuberculomas, encephalitis, abscesses, and meningitis, with the latter being the most critical and carrying a poor prognosis if left untreated. […]
Emergency Neurosurgery is a constantly evolving specialty, resulting in ever increasing challenges posed on the higher specialty trainee. The focus of this Element is to guide the reader on the application of robust and easily applicable management strategies whilst dealing with the most challenging aspects of their professional workload. The authors have categorised the various […]
This book is the first review book to use the multiple-choice question format in pediatric neurosurgery. More than 500 MCQs are provided in a convenient format that is suitable for self-study. The mission of the book is to help readers understand the content and maintain the knowledge, rather than merely finding answers for complicated questions. The […]
Quality surgeons must have all the tips, tricks, and tools to provide their patients with the best care possible. Anterior and lateral approaches have revolutionized spine surgery, but even so, many surgeons have not learned the procedures and treatment involved, and the ones who have demonstrate a very difficult learning curve. This can be partially […]
This book includes 35 vertigo cases, which covers typical cases, difficult cases and rare cases from the department of otorhinolaryngology, neurology, emergency department, geriatrics, ophthalmology, and other disciplines. In each case, it has uniform structure, which includes summary of medical records, case study and case view. This book starts from peripheral vertigo, which is the […]
This open access book offers an essential overview of brain, head and neck, and spine imaging. Over the last few years, there have been considerable advances in this area, driven by both clinical and technological developments. Written by leading international experts and teachers, the chapters are disease-oriented and cover all relevant imaging modalities, with a […]
This book summarizes rapid progress and innovation in transplantation and regenerative medicine – the merger of reconstructive plastic surgery and transplantation – called Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation. This merger includes face, hand, uteri, larynx, tongue, penis and trachea translplantations as well as other body part transplants using grafts derived from organ donors. These sorts of transplants […]
This richly illustrated book provides a comprehensive account of the imaging of scalp and calvarial lesions. It discusses essential facts such as the anatomy and pathology of the scalp and calvarium, imaging findings in CT and MRI, differential diagnosis, and selected references. The author presents the key information on the left and illustrations on the […]
This fourth edition offers a practical guide to endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular disease and provides a comprehensive reference for the related neurovascular anatomy and the various disorders that affect the vascular system. Chapters cover fundamental principles underlying cerebral and spinal angiography; interventional techniques, devices, and practice guidelines; and commonly encountered cerebrovascular disorders for which interventional […]
This atlas is the first reference covering exclusively all aspects of sciatic pain. It is designed to serve as a brief and easy-to-comprehend review of the knowledge of spinal sciatica, with emphasis on classification, epidemiology, clinical presentations, neuroimaging, and treatment options. Sections on extraspinal sciatica and differential diagnosis of this multifaceted topic are also included. […]
Skull-base surgery is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure, which involves the surgeon inserting instruments through the natural openings in the skull—the nose or mouth—or by making a small hole just above the eyebrow. This type of surgery requires a team of specialists, which may include ENT (ear, nose, and throat), maxillofacial and neurosurgeons, as well […]
This book presents a complete summary about the 12 pairs of cranial nerves (CN). They control much of the motor and sensory functions of the head and neck such as smell, sight, eye movement, and feeling in the face. The CN also control balance, hearing, and swallowing. The examination of the CN is an important […]
Modern adult brain surgery is a very new discipline. While many would consider the fathers of modern neurosurgery to be people like Victor Horsley, Harvey Cushing, and Walter Dandy, they all worked in the early 20th century, in an era before the creation of equipment now considered to be “game-changers” in the field of neurosurgery. […]
This book mainly focuses on diversity of brain diseases, such as sleep disorders, major depression disorder, anxiety disorders, epilepsy, cognitive disorders, etc. It introduces the current pathological mechanisms of various diseases from the perspective of basic theories and research; it introduces the clinical evaluation and treatment of the above diseases from the clinical perspective. In […]
This book provides an in-depth review of knowledge of the corpus callosum, called white matter or terra incognita, with emphasis on anatomical, embryological, diagnostics, and surgical features. It includes very informative chapters from leaders in the field, organized into six main groups: first, the embryology, neuroanatomy, and morphometry of the corpus callosum, and animal studies […]
On-call neurosurgery concerns practice related to urgent and emergency neurosurgical care including outside of ‘normal’ working hours. Being on-call involves many competing responsibilities and is regarded as one of the most demanding aspects of a neurosurgical career. The on-call work pattern has evolved over the past decade due to changes in demographics, technology and working […]
Neuroanatomy is considered one of the most complex subjects in the field of anatomy. The reliable literature for students is limited to classical anatomical books, many of them re-editions of publications from the previous century, with black-and-white illustrations or computer-generated images. In this sense, the literature lacks a neuroanatomical atlas depicting the brain’s surface anatomy […]
With advances in medicine and medical innovation, the face of neurosurgery has changed dramatically. A new era of surgeons values the need to undertake research in everyday practice and actively participate in the clinic and laboratory in order to improve patient prognosis. Highlighting the principles of basic neuroscience and its application to neurosurgical disease, this […]
While several books describing imaging of brain tumors from MR acquisition techniques to differential diagnosis are written by different contributors and present chapters with different styles and design, this book illustrates a unique vision and structure putting together modern molecular classification of brain tumor with modern neuroradiology. After an introduction on general imaging features of […]
